Would you look at us now - we’re Baby Boomer GRANDPARENTS! When did that happen? If you’ve looked in the mirror lately or felt those aches and pains, after a stint in the garden, you’re one of us. My final awakening was the birth of two beautiful babies in the past year. A grandson and a granddaughter, three months apart, and I’m in love. Yes, it was a wake up call that I’ve passed middle age, whatever that was, and entered the last age set of my life. But, it also jarred my senses to what is happening around me, and the fact that we have twenty, maybe thirty years, if you’re one of the younger Boomers, to make a difference, to affect change.

What change am I talking about - saving the earth, folks! That’s right, those words have become a cliche, but it’s not a joke. The state of our environment is real, and deteriorating every day! I could wax on for hours with the details, but if you ever pick up a newspaper or watch the news you know what’s happening. We’re in trouble! Ignoring these problems over the past years didn’t make them go away.

Look at those grandchildren, look into their innocent eyes, and hold those soft little bodies and tell me that you think we can let this go on. We’re the Boomers, start thinking about what we changed in the 60’s and the list is phenomenal. We’re still here, and the earth needs us, or more clearly to the point, our grandchildren and great grandchildren and their descendants need us. Let’s create a movement, we’ve done it before!

My purpose in starting this blog, is to rally us, to review books and websites, and make connections. Social networking is our greatest tool these days - it started a revolution in the Middle East, for pete sakes. I know the topic is hugely broad, but let’s just start talking and see where it takes us. We each need to know what you know, so contribute, and let’s get moving. If you ever doubt that we need to do this, look into the eyes of your grandchildren, and imagine looking into the eyes of their grandchildren, and trying to explain why we didn’t take action!

The author goes on to give eight steps to ensure that boomer retirement doesn't leave a knowledge vacuum

On the top of my resume' was a quote "Experience that works". Alas, living in a small town and the current job market only served to fuel my frustration. That’s another blog already covered http://goo.gl/IwiBr

Boomers are retiring. Years of hard data and soft know-how is preparing to leave your organization. Are you prepared to avoid the vacuum? – stated in article

In my humble opinion (uuhhmm, clearing of throat) the vast majority of boomers have been devalued by the younger generation for the most part. The soft know-how mentioned above is something that is either intuitive or takes years of practice. I understand that computers, data, technical knowledge is fueling the future, I use and appreciate the advances made. The things we do not learn from previous generations are mistakes we make in the future and some of those mistakes are very costly.

Unlike Asian culture, where each generation is taught to respect and value the wisdom of the elder, American culture seems all to quick to pitch aside anything that does not move at the speed of light. Sad, sad that a LOT more than meets the eye is being lost in the current fast paced American culture.

My take on this article: He has his view from his side of the street and I have mine (from my floating iceberg). Comments like retiring (a strong probability that a greater number will not have the privilege of accepting retirement). A lot of us have already felt the bitter insult of current economy cut backs on the nearly retired. Things like plan, invest- we did !!!! In our real estate mostly and it’s value has gone backwards. Social Security was our backup plan, it would let us eat and cover the essentials. They want to snatch that out from under us too. I can prepare for a hurricane, because it forms out in the waters many days before it reaches land and projection models are pretty good about predicting its path. Just don’t attack me in the dark with a razor and not expect me to scream!

This boomer can thank her childhood for one thing, I never had it easy. I learned from my mother and my grandmother to make do, recycle, reuse and use it up. Use everything but the squeal.
